Where does the yard end and nature begin? Looking at the surroundings of the "Mo Garden" project, this question is difficult to answer. However, the landscaping specialists implemented their unique vision in Vilnius, near the Buivydiškės ponds, not to create a puzzle. Their creative idea was inspired by the mature forest in the neighborhood.
Living in the city surrounded by nature
In order to create the environment for the new settlement, the team at the landscaping company Augalinga carefully examined the plot and its surroundings. "We first came here in early spring. We enjoyed watching nature awaken and the first buds appear. While walking around, we found a maple branch – its silhouette became the central feature of the "Mo Garden" residential area with landscaped hills – like spring buds," says Laura Baronaitė, head of "Augalinga". According to her, when forming the vision for the project, it was important to capture the ideas offered by nature itself.

"While creating and developing the Mo Garden project, we sought to reveal that being surrounded by nature is a huge advantage of a place to live. We want to give our customers the opportunity to enjoy nature every day while still being part of the city. Vilnius has a well-developed infrastructure and wonderful nature, and our project contributes to a high-quality everyday life at home, ensured by functional planning, private terraces and courtyards, A++ energy class, an economical aerothermal heating system, and other modern, practical solutions," says Edvinas Malevskis, head of REWO, the company developing the project, about the private apartment complex with courtyards.

L. Baronaitė notes that Lithuanians understand the word "garden" more as a source of edible goods than as a decorative space. Therefore, the gardeners had to come up with ideas for what edible plants they could plant near their homes. "We wanted children to be able to run out into the yard and pick berries straight from the bush. Unfortunately, most children today no longer have villages where their grandparents tend gardens with fruit trees and berry bushes," she explains.
More than 2 000 plants were planted
When inspecting the plot, the landscaping specialists were very surprised and delighted to see an abundance of strawberry flowers in the surrounding area – the entire meadow looked white. So strawberries naturally became an important part of the settlement's greenery.
The project creators estimate that a total of more than 2,000 plants of 15 different species were planted in the inner "Mo Garden" park. They selected the plants based on the flora species characteristic of the area in order to replicate the natural vegetation and ensure that the greenery blends harmoniously into the local ecosystem.

According to L. Baronaitė, this project successfully implemented the Japanese landscape design principle of borrowing the environment. "In other words, we created a system characteristic of a forest biotope in the residential area, where at least three layers of plants interact: trees, shrubs, and bushes, with grasses and mosses at the bottom. This planting method looks natural and also allows for maximum biodiversity and decorativeness throughout the warm season. In addition, it does not require too much care – the more you manage to replicate the principles of nature, the less effort you need to put in afterwards," says the specialist, who is convinced that the plants will delight residents not only with their flowers and colors, but also with their fruits – people will be able to pick dogwood berries, currants, and strawberries right from the branches, and use mint to flavor water.
The pleasure of observing natural processes
It was very unexpected that mint and strawberries adapted so quickly and began to thrive here. It seems that only a month has passed and the strawberries are already red, and we have eaten our fill of berries. The fragrant and bright plants attract insects, and birds fly in to eat the berries – so life from the forest naturally flows into the area where people live", says the representative of "Augalinga".

She points out that by implementing Mo Garden and other projects, she wants to show people that beautiful green spaces can be created without stress and with much less control over the vegetation in gardens. Once the right solution has been found, according to greening professionals, all that remains is to watch and enjoy.
